Invest In A Model That Works!

Friends of the Children-Portland has been walking alongside youth for nearly 30 years. Our model is researched-based, rooted in love, and courageously distinct. We select the highest priority youth in kindergarten and pair them with paid, professional mentors, called Friends. Our model was founded on research showing that the single most important factor in overcoming childhood adversity is a long-term, nurturing relationship with a consistent and caring adult.

Friends support and empower youth by:

  • Spending time in schools – working with the child and their teachers, advocating for individualized academic plans and empowering older youth to advocate for themselves.
  • Connecting youth to opportunities, like experiential learning experiences, internships, scholarships and informational interviews.
  • Helping a child identify coping skills, regulate emotions and find constructive outlets for stress and frustration.

Our vision is to create generational change by empowering the youth we walk alongside. We know this program works. And we know we need to continually evolve and adapt to the needs of the youth and families we serve. Join us! Make your donation today to end intergenerational poverty cycles.
